CITI GOLF

The South African Legend (1984-2009)

The Unkillable Icon

Why South Africa?

When Volkswagen discontinued the Golf Mk1 globally in 1983, South Africa faced unique market conditions and local content requirements that made continuing production viable. The Uitenhage plant became the last bastion of Mk1 production.

Evolution Through Generations

The Citi Golf evolved through several distinct phases:
- Series 1 (1984-1986): Essentially a rebadged Golf Mk1
- Series 2 (1987-1990): Updated interior and minor exterior changes
- "Bubble Shape" (1991-2009): Major facelift with rounded headlights and modernized features

Cultural Phenomenon

More than just a car, the Citi Golf became woven into South African culture. Affordable, reliable, and endlessly customizable, it became the first car for generations of South Africans and developed a massive enthusiast community.
