HISTORICAL TIMELINE

From 1974 to 2009 - The Complete Golf Mk1 & Citi Golf Story

The Complete Journey

Follow the evolution of one of automotive history's most enduring designs

1974

The Revolution Begins

The original Volkswagen Golf Mk1 is launched, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. It replaces the iconic Beetle as Volkswagen's new front-engined, front-wheel-drive compact car, setting new standards for practicality and efficiency.

1976

Birth of the Hot Hatch

The legendary Golf GTI is introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show, creating an entirely new automotive segment. With its fuel-injected 1.6L engine, sport suspension, and distinctive red trim, the GTI becomes an instant icon and performance benchmark.

1983

Global Production Ends

Volkswagen discontinues the Golf Mk1 worldwide, replacing it with the more modern Golf Mk2. However, unique market conditions in South Africa make continued production viable at the Uitenhage plant.

1984

Citi Golf Launched

Volkswagen South Africa launches the Citi Golf, continuing production of the Mk1 design. Initially essentially a rebadged Golf Mk1, it would evolve into a uniquely South African automotive icon over the next 25 years.

1987

Series 2 Update

The Citi Golf receives its first major update with improved interior features and minor exterior styling changes, keeping the design fresh and competitive in the South African market.

1991

"Bubble Shape" Facelift

A major facelift introduces rounded headlights and a more modern front-end design, creating what enthusiasts call the "Bubble Shape" Citi Golf. This update significantly modernizes the 17-year-old design.

2005

Velociti Launched

The performance-focused Citi Golf Velociti is introduced, featuring a 1.8L fuel-injected engine producing 82 kW. It becomes the spiritual successor to the original GTI and the most powerful Citi Golf ever produced.

2006

Rox Edition

The lifestyle-focused Citi Golf Rox is launched with vibrant colors, unique styling elements, and premium features aimed at the youth market. It becomes a fashion statement as much as a mode of transport.

2009

End of an Era

After 25 years and 377,484 units, the final Citi Golf rolls off the production line in Uitenhage. The last car, a special "Citi Mk1" edition, marks the end of one of the longest production runs for a single automotive design in history.
